My new iLiad AKA my new headache

iLiadI just got a new reader, the iLiad from iRex Technology.  So now not only am I as broke as a joke, I am overwhelmed by the e-book reader. I honestly don’t know what to do.  I tried playing with the device last night after it was charged and got frustrated in a matter of minutes.  The only instructions that came with my iLiad is a quick start guide that is little more than a picture guide to charging and turning on the device.  I tried to connect the reader to my home WiFi network, but I can’t tell if it is connected.  This thing costs too much money not to work right out of the box.  In all my tech adventures I have never been so intimidated.  Talk about the complexities and problems with the N770 and N800 all you want, but I was up and running mine in a matter of minutes.  Also Mobipocket is still down so this has only made my first impression of the iLiad worse.  So, earlier this morning, I went to the Mobileread forum to see what I need to do.  I am still lost and my head hurts.  After this post, I’ll send out a SOS post and see what happens. Why can’t something that is meant to be so simple, like read a book, work as soon as I take it out of the box?

I don’t have an iRex, but you minimum need to enter the SSID, channel number and the encryption key in the iRex before it can talk to your WiFi. If that was not the case, your neighbor would have free WiFi. Or maybe he has? :)

If you don’t know these: log into your WiFi the usual way via a web-browser, check that the DHCP server is set in the LAN section (probably is) and get the SSID, channel and encryption key from the WiFi section. Enter the SSID, channel and key into the iRex. At the same time check that the iRex has been set to automatically contact a DHCP server. Switch it off afterwards and switch it on, holding your breath. Now it will hopefully work.

If you don’t use DHCP on your WiFi for security reasons, ask again. :)

    Jorgen,

I finally got it to work with my network. Instead of doing it manually, I let the device search for my network and went from there. Once connected I deleted the other profile. I am still trying to figure out why the iLiad freaked me out so much.
I use to have my network open, but then my neighbor’s teenage kids, kept sneaking around on my network, so I closed it. All they had to do was ask. Then once I added more network stuff (wireless print server, slingbox, xbox live) I had to secure the network. On my N800 I can see my neighbors networks and pretty much all are secure.

Thanks for your advice though. It’s nice to know that there are people willing to lend a helping hand.

    Ellen
