My Cable went out

My cable went out Friday afternoon and I spent the next seven hours trying to get someone to come out and fix it. Apparently, when it was installed they never covered the cable outside. The guy who cuts my grass also cut my cable. Time Warner said that was a very low priority in the world of repairs. My you I also have digital phone service along with TV service and Internet. So my being without a phone wasn’t their concern. It wasn’t until I told them to cancel my service that I suddenly became a priority. So suddenly instead of one week they were at my door yesterday. I have had enough of Road Runner. I am changing to a new service called Embarq. Satellite here I come. My only reservation is that I will have DSL. If any of you have it, let me know how good it is compared to Cable (Broadband).

Sorry you fell for the hype. While cable can technically be faster….it rarely is. DSL is generally better as you are not as affected when your neighbor’s decide to use the net.

I’d recommend Dish network for your sat. and vonage for your phone service.

Thanks for the info. I was taught in a class a few years ago that if you have DSL you need to be within a certain radius of the central office. So I am glad to hear that it is fast. I do know that in the past year my cable has slowed down. It seems like everyone on my street has it now(I see their networks on my Nokia). Embarq has Dish network so that’s what I am getting. I am getting a landline though. I use to have Vonage and loved it. I like the email notifications on Voicemail and the online log of my calls. I hate that I went to Time Warner for it. I may go back to Vonage. My only gripe was that calls to the Virgin Islands was considered an international call and my best friend lives there.

Although DSL does not suffer from the neighborhood increasing like cable does, it does have a drawback. DSL uses fiber hubs for the main portion of its connectivity. However most people do not have fiber to their homes. So the speed of DSL depends on the length of copper connection between your home & the nearest fiber hub. If it is less than 1/2 mile you are in great shape. If it is more than 3 - 4 miles, you will not achieve the real speeds you want.

Thanks. Here’s to hoping I am near the hub, but somehow I doubt it. My daughter has it and she says it seems fast.
