Sony PRS-505 Initial user thoughts

PRS-505Just about everyone has some sort of review of the newest Sony reader. Some of you for sure are getting tired of the same old thing being said, so hopefully my review will be different.  First, I would like to point out that who ever came up with the first version should be transferred to another department.  This time Sony finally got the design right for a person who simply wants to read.  I read Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkin’s Kingdom Come in one sitting. I was totally engrossed with the texture and feel of this e-book reader. Understand that I was recovering from my Lasik enhancement procedure and I couldn’t bear to look at a computer screen for more than a couple of minutes. I found no problem at all with the PRS-505; no eye strain, no having to make myself blink. The screen on the PRS-500 is so much clearer and brighter.  I almost felt like it had a light.  When I read on the older Sony reader I always had to have additional lighting in the room, not so anymore.  Another thing that impresses me is the ergonomics.  This has to be the lightest device I have every used.  The button placement is natural to how I hold a book.  I didn’t have to reach to turn pages.  What was funny is that I caught myself alternating page turns; sometimes with my left hand and sometimes with my right.  I am so glad that Sony moved those number buttons to the side.  On the original reader I was constantly touching the buttons and losing my place.  I found it more than frustrating. I haven’t experienced any ghosting, but to be fair I didn’t experience this with the original reader either.  I have notice that page turns are faster, comparable to turning pages in a paper book.

I do have some gripes though.  I am real big on covers.  I guess it’s to make up for not being able to use a pretty bookmark.  I don’t like the cover for the 505.  It’s got a swivel attachment and when I fold it back it feels and looks like I am holding a binder.  No real biggie, I simply detached the reader from the cover.  This cover also feels cheaper and I wonder about the durability of the attachment.  I am also wondering how many times this cover can withstand being folded back before it splits.  I have had this happen many times with binders that I use. One good thing is that this cover omits that snap in disc that was begging to break my screen. I have ordered the pink premium cover and hopefully it is an improvement over the stock tan colored one.  That bothers me too.  The color they picked is a turn off.  It doesn’t match the silver color of my reader and makes it look cheap.  I see better covers in the dollar store for paper organizers.  Sony doesn’t include a AC adapter, but you can use your adapter from the original reader.  usb to AC adapterAlso you can pick up an usb to AC adapter relatively cheap.

So should you buy one?  If you are happy with your PRS-500, there is no reason to upgrade.  If you’ve been waiting for a reader this may be the one for you.  The only thing Sony needs to do now is to get rid of their DRM reader and get one that recognizes Palm ereader and Mobipocket books.  Yeah, I know I am dreaming.

    Hi,
Thanks for the initial thoughts on the PRS-505. I had a chance to briefly play with one today in a store. Have to admit, it’s not bad. However, I wish I could have seen how it deals with PDFs, since that makes up the bulk of what I would read on this device. Have you had a chance to test drive this feature yet?

Not yet, but I will tomorrow since there is an interest and let you know. I am mostly a read for fun e-book type person, but as I look at the pile of printed pdf files on my floor, maybe I should reconsider.

Hi, Ellen — thanks for the review of the 505. Did you have a chance to test the PDF functionality yesterday? What were your thoughts? Also, do you know if/how you download RSS feeds to your Reader? I seem to recall reading that you could do that, but haven’t seen any info on it. For example, could you download the contents of Google Reader to your 505?

    David,

Sorry I have not got back to you. I forgot that not only do I have a paper to write this week, but a test too in my course. I did load a pdf and there was no change. Sony has a guide (43 pages) on how to format a pdf for the reader. I haven’t read it yet. I was hoping that the reader had been upgraded to fix pdf files natively without my help.

My biggest complaint about the PRS-500 is its inability to adequately manage collections. With an additional SD-card, my eReader has hundreds and hundreds of books and documents, and the supplied By-Date or By-Author become rather useless. The ability to create collections is the obvious solution to this, but at present one can only create collections on the internal storage — *NOT* on the external media.

PLEASE tell me this has been rectified with the new device, and even better, with the new firmware upgrade that I can apply to my PRS-500.

    Steve,

I tried to put collections on my SD card, but no luck. It allowed me to create the section, but I couldn’t add any books. That sucks. Could be me. I will read the help file and look at Mobileread to see if anyone has been able to and let you know.

Nice review! I’m pretty pleased with my PRS-505 as well–I loved my 500, but this makes it look like an early prototype in comparison. I completely agree with you about the cover. It feels flimsy and I hate the way it’s attached. I suppose it’s an improvement in safety from the first cover, but I just hate the way it swivels around like that. It makes it really uncomfortable to hold with the right hand. I also stopped using the cover. Currently, I’m carrying my new Reader around in my old Rocket eBook carrying case.

    Feliza,

So it fits in the Rocket case. That was an awesome case. You can still buy one at alltronics.com for 2.95 if you want extras.

I am also hoping that buymedge will come out with a better case. I am glad that you are enjoying for e-book reader. It’s this kind of thing that makes people want to wait until another generation comes out. I can say that I got a lot out of my 500 and will continue to do so as a back up to the 505.

Finally got a chance to try this — the new eConnect software lets you create collections on external storage, and indeed I was thrilled to be able to move books from the “root” directory to the collections. However, as soon as I disconnected the eReader, I saw that not only were the new external collections gone, but my old collections from the internal storage were gone as well.

It appears as though SONY needs to release a corresponding firmware upgrade for the PRS-500 for this to work. Anyone have any idea if this is coming soon?

Ummm… Mobipocket and eReader are both DRM schemes, so getting rid of Sony’s LRF format for Mobi/eReader isn’t really a step forward.

    Ayrkain,

True, but it would give me more books to choose from without converting.

    Steve,

From what I understand the new library features only work on the PRS-505. We do need an update for the 500 and I hope Sony doesn’t abandon us. Something tells me they will since they want people to buy the newer reader. I believe that is bad business. Who wants to buy something knowing that as soon as a new model comes out, their device is “dead”. Maybe if we make a big enough stink, they will come up with some sort of software or firmware upgrade. I am thinking of uninstalling and then a fresh install of the new software to see if I can get the collections to show up on the 505 SD card.

    Hi

I’m a PRS-500 owner and completely love it. I just thought I’d drop a thanks for the intro review - it confirms my decision to stick with the 500 till something a little more revolutionary comes around. I think the next logical step up from these besties are something like this:
    http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/05/fujitsu-shows-off-color-e-ink-tablet-concept/
“Fujitsu has already managed to squeeze a whole VGA display into a 4.7-inch x 6.3-inch handheld unit. The concept sports 4096 colors, 32MB of built-in memory and a miniSD slot, but weighs a mere 6.2 ounces.”

    Steve,

Yes, if you are happy stick with what you got. These things cost too much money to keep changing when there’s no significant difference. Color e-ink will be a nice change, but I really want some sort of lighting to be provided. I don’t want to clip a light on my device.

I completely agree about the need for a firmware upgrade to the PRS-500 so that it can support external collections, as well as act as a mass storage device so we don’t have to use the (beyond-horrible) Connect software. I didn’t realize that Collections on the SD card didn’t work when I bought by PRS-500, but unfortunately due to traveling wasn’t able to return within 30 days (which would have allowed me to purchase the 505 instead which came out 2 weeks after I got the 500 :-(

    ZeroHalo,

In spite of not being able to organize your books into collections on the SD card, I hope that the reader is enjoyable. I think people do put books on their 500 without using the software. You should look around the mobileread forum. If I come across anything I will let you know.

Bought the PRS 505 2 weeks ago and got the free 100 classic books special. The screen for BBeB formats is excellent.
PDF formated items are difficult to read and are not very clear. Instead of Word Doc formats, save your Word documents in RTF (Rich Text Format) in 14 size font. Overall I love the device and carry it with me everywhere since I’m a classics fan. The 100 free books make it well worth the price. But, it does not read PDF with DRM so don’t think about buying books from any site other than the SONY Connect-book site. And, you also can’t check out E-books from the local library because they have PDF DRM, also (a major limitation). I rate it 9 on a 10 scale. Awesome device but SONY’s usual proprietary execution (BBeB format) and inability to play well with other formats limits the truely outstanding potential of this device.

Chris, Have you installed the software that came with the reader? Also you should check out Mobileread.com’s forum for help and how to. Also there should be a user guide on your reader.

I just spoke with Sony’s support organization for the fourth time in a month, and again am unable to extract *ANY* information about whether or not they intend to provide a firmware upgrade to the PRS-500 which would enable the creation of collections on an external storage card.

They fixed this obvious and painful shortcoming with the PRS-505, and indeed addressed it with an upgrade to the eConnect software. But the 500 itself needs to be patched, and neither the web site, nor the FAQ, nor the Sony Support staff are able to answer this.

It is incredible to me that the product team appears disengaged and uninterested in a user community trying their best to rally support for their product. They offer no direct email communication, and hide behind a totally ineffective support organization and poorly maintained web site.

    Inexcusable.

I love the Sony reader. Wasn’t there a more expensive leather cover available from Sony, if you’re into that sort of thing? And you don’t need a charger, it charges just fine over regular USB.

Might I suggest dumping the crappy Sony PC reader software and getting Calibre?

Just purchased a PRS-505 from walmart.com for around $260 and I’m very happy with it. Yes, there are still some glitchy things to be aware of with any ebook device you decide on, but I love my Sony so far. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone using the PRS series to download Calibre as Michiel noted above. It can be a bit fussy at times, but offers many features that the Sony software doesn’t such as being able to update the metadata on files, convert .LIT and other file types to the Sony format, add cover art easily to files, etc.

    Shaz,

I understand the budget situation. I would love to be be able to buy every device that catches my eye. Have you considered buying a refurbished reader? They are cheaper and on some sites you can even get an extended warranty.

    Michael,

I have looked at Calibre and I must be having a brain cramp. It’s a bit confusing to me and I haven’t looked at the tutorials. Maybe I should since most of my attempts at formating books for the Sony reader have been dismal at best.
