I love the Sony reader. Wasn’t there a more expensive leather cover available from Sony, if you’re into that sort of thing? And you don’t need a charger, it charges just fine over regular USB.

Might I suggest dumping the crappy Sony PC reader software and getting Calibre?
http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/

Michael,

I have looked at Calibre and I must be having a brain cramp. It's a bit confusing to me and I haven't looked at the tutorials. Maybe I should since most of my attempts at formating books for the Sony reader have been dismal at best.

Shaz,

I understand the budget situation. I would love to be be able to buy every device that catches my eye. Have you considered buying a refurbished reader? They are cheaper and on some sites you can even get an extended warranty.

I am convinced--I'm going to buy a PRS-505, as soon as I can figure out how to budget for it! :-)

Just purchased a PRS-505 from walmart.com for around $260 and I'm very happy with it. Yes, there are still some glitchy things to be aware of with any ebook device you decide on, but I love my Sony so far. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone using the PRS series to download Calibre as Michiel noted above. It can be a bit fussy at times, but offers many features that the Sony software doesn't such as being able to update the metadata on files, convert .LIT and other file types to the Sony format, add cover art easily to files, etc.

I just spoke with Sony's support organization for the fourth time in a month, and again am unable to extract *ANY* information about whether or not they intend to provide a firmware upgrade to the PRS-500 which would enable the creation of collections on an external storage card.

They fixed this obvious and painful shortcoming with the PRS-505, and indeed addressed it with an upgrade to the eConnect software. But the 500 itself needs to be patched, and neither the web site, nor the FAQ, nor the Sony Support staff are able to answer this.

It is incredible to me that the product team appears disengaged and uninterested in a user community trying their best to rally support for their product. They offer no direct email communication, and hide behind a totally ineffective support organization and poorly maintained web site.

Inexcusable.

I just purchased the prs 505 and I do not know what to use to download ebooks.
Do I use Adobe, Microsoft Reader or eReader (formaly palm). Can anyone help with this question?

Chris, Have you installed the software that came with the reader? Also you should check out Mobileread.com's forum for help and how to. Also there should be a user guide on your reader.

Bought the PRS 505 2 weeks ago and got the free 100 classic books special. The screen for BBeB formats is excellent.
PDF formated items are difficult to read and are not very clear. Instead of Word Doc formats, save your Word documents in RTF (Rich Text Format) in 14 size font. Overall I love the device and carry it with me everywhere since I'm a classics fan. The 100 free books make it well worth the price. But, it does not read PDF with DRM so don't think about buying books from any site other than the SONY Connect-book site. And, you also can't check out E-books from the local library because they have PDF DRM, also (a major limitation). I rate it 9 on a 10 scale. Awesome device but SONY's usual proprietary execution (BBeB format) and inability to play well with other formats limits the truely outstanding potential of this device.
