Don’t forget to pick up some memory

Tag: DiscountsEllen Hage @ 10:06 pm

SD CardIt’s always disappointing and frustrating to receive a gift to find out that it needs something else to get it to work.  Double the feeling is the gift is for a child and the occasion is Christmas.  When I give a gift I always buy batteries or whatever is needed to avoid any immediate problems.  I have extended this process to include memory cards especially if I know the person is not familiar with gadgets.  So, if I give a digital camera I also include the correct batteries and a memory card to get things going. I figure the easier I make it, the better the chances are that the person will enjoy and continue to use the gift.  Right now there are some great deals on memory.  Meritline is selling a Kingston 8gb SDHC card for $54.99 shipped.  After the mail in rebate the final cost is $39.99.  This sale is good through the end of this month.  This is ideal for the Eee PC users out there. A real steal is a 1gb SD card for only $7.95 shipped.  They also have a Sandisk 2gb MicroSD Card for $26.96 shipped.  The card includes both miniSD and SD adapters.  For those needing CF Cards, you can get a 2gb A-Data one for $17.00 shipped.  You may find many deals better than this in brick and mortar stores this time of year.  While you are at it, don’t forget to buy yourself a few memory cards.  For those of us that are still using Smart Media Cards, Geeks is selling Delkin eFilm 128mb  cards for $40.50!  Yes, that is expensive, but considering how hard it is to come by these, it may be worth the price.  While Ebookwise sells cards with the EBW1150, I don’t believe they sell these cards separately.  Geeks is also selling Hitachi 4gb CF+ type II microdrives for $15.50.  I bought one of these and have had no problems.  You can also get a 23 in 1 card read for only $3.99.  As always you should check to make sure the cards are compatible with your device.

Just ordered the basic EBW1150 and the 128mb Delkin card. Trouble deciding, but based on what I’ve read (MobileRead has a thread with more than positive comments) feel sure it’s worth $150. Paid a lot more than that for my Cybook and much prefer the DT375 and Nokia N770 to it. Besides while waiting for NAEB to get their #**# together it occurred to me that my reading is almost exclusive at night so a backlight is a definite plus. For me the negatives far outweigh the positives on the Kindle. Sure 2008 will bring more options so I’m content leaving this year w/what I have.
Glad to see your back to your Blog (missed you recently…I have it on my Firefox Morning Coffee extension), but I will skip your Kindle review!

Deanna, Glad you got the EBW1150. I really think that this well is about to dry up. You know they have been working on an e-ink device(ebook technologies). It will be a sad day that this great reader is no longer available. Yes, the EBW is well worth the money. I love mine and like you I beleve that backlighting is a must. I see that you have the DT375. How is that working for you? Don’t forget to visit http://www.dt375.com Andy is always adding more stuff.
I am glad to be back. One of my problems is trying to find something worthwhile to talk about. I hate just repesting what everyone else is saying. I have also been so stressed out recently. I haven’t even thought about getting the new Cybook and NAEB is a bit much for the price considering what you get. As far as the Kindle, you ain’t missing a thing. I should have my initial thoughts up tomorrow in case you change your mind. If anything it should make you feel better about the EBW.

Ah, the DT375. Love it, but between it and the Nokia 770 I’m in a technological muddle; e.g., I can’t get the Ambicom driver to install so I can use my Cybook wireless card as mentioned in your Aug. blog. I get an error window “controller not present” when I try connecting w/Bluetooth. Since the 375 arrived w/out an internal battery (I am awaiting one from Andy; wish I’d have known at the time I bought my 375 that he sells them) I’m wondering if there are other missing essentials. Guess I’m a “beginning” Geek!

I mention the 770 (it’s befuddlements are directly correlated to those of the key operator! me) as a digression to the the Eee PC. Was w/in a couple of clicks of ordering it but read/viewed David Pogue’s (NYT, technology) column/video on OneLapTop XO and have decided (selfishly) to keep one for myself so I can, quoting Mr. Pogue, “…not only study how…programs have been written, but even experiment…” He mentions in the video Python, which I keep running into at Internet Tablet Talk. Think it would help me immeasurably w/the 770, which I also like a lot.

I did read your thoughts on the Kindle and the more I read the surer I am I don’t want one…tho I do like rubber grips.
I think you do a fine job finding worthy topics –informative, thought provoking. Still pondering those gray areas you wrote about on Oct. 28.

    Deanna,

I will dig out the driver for the Ambicom Wifi card. The drivers are different for the DT375. I am confused about the bluetooth. Do you mean bluetooth on the DT375? Connecting to your PC or Internet? Email me evhage at gmail dot com. I am sure we can get this together. Just let me know what you are trying to do and with what. I am glad you are becoming a geek!
I started to get the OLPC, but opted for the Eee PC. I really like it now that I have windows on it. Maybe next year I will get one once I save up for it. Right now I am trying to upgrade my Nokia 800 to the OS2008 and it is painful. I think I am under some anti tech cloud or something. This is the type fo thing that distracts me from writing for the blog.
As far as the Kindle, you are better off without it. I think that the Kindle is for people who really don’t know better. I bought it because I am addicted to gadgets. I am going go back to the Oct 28 post and re-read it.
