About Ellen Hage

My interest in e-books began in 1997 after seeing the Franklin Rocket E-book in Sky Mall magazine. The price was like $700 and although way out of range for me I wanted one. Finally three years later I bought one from J and R online for $200. There weren’t many books available for it then, but that didn’t matter. I was hooked and promised to give up paper books for good. I’ve kept that promise except for text books for the past seven years. My current quest is to find the perfect e-book device, while converting as many people as possible to e-bookers along the way.

I am a native Virginian, born and raised in Alexandria. I currently live in Harker Heights, Texas which is right outside Fort Hood, after retiring from the Army in 2003. I am married and have three children ages 22, 15, and 6.

My academic background includes a BA degree from Lafayette College (1980) in International Affairs, a MS degree from University of LaVerne (2000) in Organizational Management, and a Ph.D. from Capella University (2005) in Organizational Management with a specialization in Information Technology. My dissertation was on e-book self-efficacy and usage levels across age and gender.

Dedicated e-book devices I own:

6 Original Rocket e-books (One I made myself from parts from Alltronics. I got lucky and received a motherboard with 48mb!)

2 Hiebooks

2 Ebookman readers

2 REB1100s

2 REB1200s

1 EBW1150

1 GEB 1150 (migrated to Ebookwise)

1 Cybook

1 Sony Librie

1 Kolin reader

2 Sony Readers

1 iLiad

My non-dedicated readers include

2 Epods

1 Nokia N800

1 Nokia N770

2 Clio 1000s

1 DT375 Web Pad

and too many PDAs to list

Ellen, Nice website and I like the “e-book” direction that you are going here. I also wanted to make sure that it was you, and not some scammer, that just e-mailed me on ebay. I get so many scams from ebay that I thought I would make sure it was you.

    Thanks again,

    Tom

    Tom,

Yes I am a real person. I understand your caution. Thanks, for the compliment re the site. This is my first attempt at this. Hopefully, you are willing to share your great description of the N800.

    Thanks, Ellen

    Hi

I’m Tamas Simon, a TeleBlog contributor as yourself.
I’m wondering if you’d be interested in adding DigitalReading Search to your site.
It would nicely fit in the right sidebar and would allow people to search for free and pay-for ebooks as well as books on Google’s Book Search.

I’ve offered this to David Rothman as well, he decided not to use it after long consideration - that time I had a warez category that he was not OK with and after I removed it we did not get back to it.

I gave him the idea for the automatic ebook news - powered by Google news, that did appear on TeleBlog until the latest WordPRess upgrade. Personally I didn’t like the way he did it, IMO it can be done better and nicer.

The point is… I’m working on services like this but my website has close to zero traffic. I’d like to partner with someone.
It seems like a good idea to join forces with you.

    Regards

    Tamas Simon (Sic)

    Tamas,

While I am not interested in the automatic ebooks news scroll at this time, I am open to the ebook search. Write me with details at Ellen_Hageattechusersdotorg

Like you, I got into reading devices with the Rocket eBook. I have the Hiebook, and the Franklin Bookman. I quit at that point since most of my reading was on my PDA of choice at the time while sitting in court or outside court or somewhere in the courthouse waiting for my case or cases that I was trying to be heard. I got in the habit of reading from the PDA’s and found that when I fell asleep with the “books” the PDA didn’t hurt as badly as the larger readers when they wapped me in the face! ; ) I am now waiting for the “perfect” blend of size (no more painful large readers), battery life (maybe one of the new bendable ones will give long life), and screen resolution (I think an eInk that is color, quickly refreshes and shows videos). I own thousands of ebooks from different stores all over the web and have several in various different formats.

I really like your website. Please add more on ebookstore sites, comparisons and prices.

I personally have been appalled to see so many prices for ebooks in the teens and twenty dollar range these days. I can frequently find the same book on sale in hard cover or paperback much cheaper. My siblings and their children are all luddites and insist on paper books….of course they rotate them through each other and eventually I get to read them if they still have all the pages….

    Susan,

Thanks so much for dropping by. PDAs are so convenient for reading on the go. I use my HP iPaq 4700. I use to use my TX, but I think the screen is better on the HP and it is easier for me to navigate from page to page. I agree about the prices for e-books. Sometimes I think they keep the prices high to discourage sales. One of the reasons that I started this blog was to interact with others that share an interest in e-books because none of my friends or relatives are interested.

I will also add the topics that you are interested in knowing more about.

    Dear Ellen

I am a freelance journalist writing an article for the UK magazine PC Pro about the current state of affairs in ebooks, with particular reference to the different formats on offer, and the confusion that confronts consumers. I would like to tee up an interview with you (either by email or phone) to discuss a few issues that seem to be rising to the surface.

For example, the epub format looks interesting, but is it another way for publishers and the bigger software companies to retain control of books? And is the multitude of formats holding the ebook back?

I look forward to hearing from you

    Hi Ellen,
I wasn’t sure if you saw my response to your earlier post about the Eee PC, so I thought I’d post a comment here as well. I am a reporter with the Wall Street Journal and based in San Francisco, Calif. I am working on a story about the Eee PC and I saw your blog post about it. I was wondering if you’d be interested in interviewing with me for my story. It wouldn’t take too much of your time and I’d be happy to give you more details about the story, if you would just email me directly at christopher.lawton@wsj.com. Thanks so much. I hope to hear you.

    Best,
    Christopher

Ellen, your site is just great. Really, because there is a lack of information about my device Web DT 375. I know only two serious web resources about it.
Andy’s site and yours. Thanks one more time. So, about my problem. I bought DT375 on Ebay a few days ago. The reason to buy was I wanted to change small screen of my Sony Clie NR-70 to bigger one because I got my eye problem. Unfortunately there was no cradle in the lot and DT375 USB driver for the PC.
I installed the Microsoft ActiveSync 4.2 and stopped my actions on this step. I have no information about how can I connect device without a cradle. What sort of USB cable can I use? I didn’t find a cradle on your pictures, there was a special stand in use. I understood you have no cradle as well. So, can you teach me how can I fix this connection problem?
    Thanks a lot
    Best regards

    Alex,

I have never sync’d my 375 with a PC. You have to have a cradle. Everything I do is from a CF Card. First I copy the install files onto the CF card from my PC and then I put the card into my DT375 and install. I did install my favorite folder from my PC by exporting the favorites then inmporting them into my tablet, again using the CF card. Andy does sell the cradle if you really want the ability to sync, but they are expensive. I really bought the web tablet for reading and playing a couple of simple games. HTH

Nice site - have bookmarked. My own ebook regimen revolves around my N800 and Fbreader. N800 has become my primary device in the effort to go laptopless, but will probably add an e-ink device to segregate out my reading. In any event, congrats on a well done site.

Thanks Chuck. As far as the N800 it is one the few things I have that from day 1 I take with me everywhere.

    Hi Ellen,

I’m really glad I just stumbled across your blog. I’ve been reading Teleread recently and it’s great to find another blog that talks about eBooks.

I hope this doesn’t sound commercial, but I just wanted to let you know that I released a free classic literature ebook site a month or so back. The focus is on quality eBooks rather sheer quantity, so I’ve spent a lot of time on getting the typography at a high quality (I must have spent days on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland alone).

    http://www.planetebook.com/

Anyway, I thought you might be interested. I’d love to hear if they look OK on the devices you’re reading them on.

So far I’ve published the books in PDF format so they may not be fantastic on some of the devices you use, but I’m currently investigating creating an EPUB version as well, which we’ll hopefully see most future devices support.

    Hi Ellen,
I just got my hands on a dt375, so far so good. The only problem I have is finding a 10/100 Network Card that will work on this baby.
    Have you got any ideas?

    TIA

These are hard to come by. Have you tried Ebay? The trick is finding the drivers. I already had an ethernet card from back in the day, that I used with my ipaq. Try here to see if you can maybe find drivers for a ethernet card that you may have around. http://www.hpcfactor.com/ It should be under the download section.

    Hi Ellen,

Do you have any experience with teens and ebooks? My first YA novel MORTAL GHOST is available in multiple eformats (Feedbooks and elsewhere) but I get the feeling that most of my readers are adults.
